It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our friend and fellow DJ and radio host, Lorenzo. Lorenzo had been in hospital with some heart issues. Our hearts are broken at this news and our deepest condolences go out to his family.
Lorenzo was a passionate music lover and a true champion of local talent. His presence was a constant at music events, and he was especially fond of Guster, attending Guster on the Ocean with unwavering enthusiasm.
As a cherished volunteer at WMPG, Lorenzo was always there to lend a hand during every Begathon fundraiser. Recently, he took on the role of hosting the Podcast Open Mic , where he brought to life the stories of musicians and creatives in our community, interviewing talents like Reesa Wood, Jen Ayers, Nicole LePera, Erin Zeli, Plague Dad, Hannah Harleen, and many others.
A few years ago, Lorenzo’s dedication was recognized when he received an award from the Maine Association of Broadcasters for his feature, “Don’t Forget the Blues Y’all,” a heartfelt tribute to the late WMPG DJ Myron Samuels. His on-air conversations with Steve Hirshon and the memorable Lorenzo Commentaries will forever resonate with listeners.
One colleague described Lorenzo as “the heartbeat of WMPG,” a sentiment that speaks to the warmth and joy he brought to everyone around him. Another WMPG volunteer noted that his absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt, but “his legacy of recordings will continue to remind us of the incredible gift he was to our community.”
Lorenzo’s presence will be profoundly missed by all of us here at the station.
