WMPG’s Jazz at the Movies Coming Soon!

Join us for a screening of Cesaria Evora, a film that follows the struggles and successes of this incredible singer. Born into poverty in Colonial Cape Verde, the film draws an empowering portrait of the legendary singer as she scales the music world’s heights– garnering multiple gold records, a Grammy, and selling out the most prestigious performance venues throughout the world. Cesaria Evora traces the diverse political and social contexts of Evora’s life, universal themes of freedom, and gender and racial inequality. Illustrated by never before seen archival footage, the film includes original recordings and unique perspectives from the people who knew the woman behind the legend.

Join WMPG’s Jazz at the Movies Saturday, September 21 7PM for the Portland premier offering a glimpse of Cesaria, who’s voice became a feminist force and an African icon at the height of her fame. Admission is free.
