SUCCESSFUL ONE DAY BEG & BLUEGRASS SPECTACULAR
Looking for news about our one day Begathon and the Bluegrass Spectacular? You’ll
find all that and information about upcoming events down in section 3, “Development
Corner.”
NEWS FROM BLUNT YOUTH RADIO
The Blunt community is thrilled to welcome back Molly Adams, former Blunt member,
who is on staff with Blunt for the summer. Molly just graduated from Colorado
College and received a graduation fellowship, which is funding her tenure at
Blunt. Yeah, Molly!
We are also thrilled at recent help from other Blunt alumni. Ethan Jud has been
fixing up and polishing our web site, something which has needed doing for a
long while. Check our new PayPal button, among other changes! Reid Stevenson,
always a whiz at electronics, has actually
FIXED about six of our many dead and broken mini-disc recorders, saving us tons
of money because there is nowhere to get those units commercially repaired,
so the only fix had been buying new! Muchas gracias to both Ethan and Reid.
New training for Blunt starts this July. Any interested teens should contact
Claire Holman at holman@usm.maine.edu.
We have one new show each in music genre and talk this month.
The new music show is Foley's Recovery, hosted by brand-new volunteer Stuart
Townsend. Here's his description: "An overnight show examining the currents
of music in genres spanning thrash metal to easy listening. Asking the questions
'where does this music come from?' and 'where the hell are we going from here?'
while groovin' at the same time." You can check it out Friday mornings
from 1:30 to 4 am.
The new talk show is Safe Space, a two-month replacement show for HomeDad, which
is taking the summer off. "Local psychiatrist Anne Hallward hosts a half
hour talk show, interviewing experts on vulnerable subjects that people feel
ashamed to ask about. The tone of this show is therapeutic and educational in
nature; designed to help listeners understand and accept parts of themselves
that they may never have shared with others. The subject matter for this show
will range considerably, from the vulnerability of adoption, mental illness
and death, to difficult conversations about race and torture." Safe Space
will air Tuesday afternoons from 1 to 1:30 pm in July and August on WMPG.
And finally, a correction from last month: The show Tommy's Variety now airs
from 11:30 pm on Wednesday to 1 am on Thursday, not the same slot from Tuesday
into Wednesday as reported here last month.

into Indian music and experimental psychedelic style. We will have it all on

more.

I were granted an exclusive interview with Goth music legend Peter Murphy of
Bauhaus, and we'll feature that interview plus music from Bauhaus dating back
to their 80s 4AD work to their new album, plus feature some of Peter's great
solo work. A show not to be missed.
7/27 - GUEST HOST TBA - Will it be Special K? Will it be Jedi-in-training DJ
Shawn? Will it be someone else filling in for Ron this week? Tune in to find
out, because whoever hosts this week will be fantastic and worthy of a listen!
And coming this summer - MORE COWBELL! - a special 4-hour merging of STUCK IN
THE 80s and YOU'LL DANCE TO ANYTHING, highlighting songs with...you guessed
it! Also featuring guest co-host Spindle. Should be a lot of fun.
One Day Beg!
Thursday June 26 was our One Day Begathon… and it was indeed packed with
power! We pitched on-air all day, cooked well over 100 burgers and dogs at lunchtime,
and had a Community Radio Yard Sale. When all was said and done, we raised over
$6,000 in a day and had a blast doing it. Thanks to every listener supporter
who called, lunched and shopped with us. We needed your help to make up lost
funding and you came through… and reminded us why we do what we do. It’s
for our loyal and supportive listeners!
Local business that helped us with the day – Tony’s Donuts, Costa
Vida, One-Eyed Jack’s Pizza, Shaw’s and Hannaford, and Aramark/USM
Dining. Thanks for your help and enthusiastic support!
Bluegrass!
The 6th annual Bluegrass Spectacular at the St. Lawrence Arts and Community
Center was a sellout! The Grassholes, The Stowaways and the Jerks of Grass put
on a fantastic concert. Very special guests, three young music students from
317 Main in Yarmouth, blew the audience away with their talent. The event raised
over $1000 for WMPG. Thanks to Deirdre, Liz and Bobby at the St. Lawrence for
hosting the event once again. Huge thanks also to Merrill Marsh, WMPG volunteer,
who organizes and manages the event for us. Flatbread Pizza gets our thanks
for feeding the musicians. The Bluegrass Spectacular really is, well….
SPECTACULAR. We can hardly wait for Bluegrass Spectacular #7 next year!
Family Fest
Sunday August 24th is the day! Family Fun is the reason! Please save the day
for WMPG’s Family Fest. If you know of businesses, artists, performers
or others who would like to participate, please contact (or suggest that those
folks do) Dale Robin Lockman at (207) 780-4151 or development@wmpg.org <mailto:development@wmpg.org>
