On Tuesday, September 13th, WMPG devoted a special day of programming to raise funds for sister community station WWOZ in New Orleans. WWOZ is known nationally for its championing of New Orleans roots music and culture. It's community service mission is very similar to WMPG's.
WWOZ is in desperate need of money after hurricane Katrina. The first floor of their facilities have been flooded and the status of their transmitter site is unknown. Their staff is scattered across many states and having trouble even locating and communicating with each other. Their most immediate need is funds for a temporary transmitter site. If they can manage that, they will start working towards a temporary studio. In the long run, they face the task of rebuilding, probably completely from scratch.
WMPG went on air Tuesday, September 13th, from 6:30am to 7pm, to raise money for WWOZ. All of our regular music programs during that time span was devoted to New Orleans music. Our fund-raising phone lines were opened up and Maine community radio supporters from Maine stepped forward and donated more than $3900. 100% of all funds raised will be forwarded directly to WWOZ as a collective donation from WMPG's listeners and the people of Maine. There was also a WMPG station open house all day with free New Orleans cuisine donated by Uncle Billy's BBQ and the Bayou Kitchen! Listeners were encouraged to drop by, have some gumbo, and write a check for WWOZ. There was also a raffle featuring a special extra large Zippy Bucket of Blues.
